always messy

Picture
Oening 29 January - Piazza Gallery, Walyalup Fremantle.
This exhibition is the culmination of a year of learning, challenge, and emotional exploration through clay. It is a love letter to my messy studio, mind, and heart.
This body of work focuses largely on abstract sculpture—an approach to making that often feels like the most honest and intuitive way for me to express myself. The pieces were created in my small Walyalup studio and follow my major solo exhibition Bedforms in February 2025.

SECRET SHORES - FREMANTLE BIENNALE

Picture
'Over nine weeks, Year 5 and 6 students from Spearwood Primary School and Intensive English Centre (IEC) students from North Lake Senior Campus will collaborate with artists Peta Roebuck and Shupiwe Chongwe to explore this year’s theme of Sanctuary — through storytelling, sculpture, drawing and digital media. Guided by artist mentorship and cultural knowledge, they’ll experiment, reflect, and create new works inspired by ideas of place, identity and belonging.
Secret Shores supports students from schools with limited access to arts learning, offering a rare opportunity to connect with professional artists and creative process. Their responses will culminate in two public outcomes during the Biennale.' Fremantle Biennale Inc

FREMANTLE X SA BIENNALE ARTIST EXCHANGE

Guest House Exhibition
'Guest House is the second edition of the annual collaborative exhibition between local Walyalup based tattoo and ceramic artists. Eight ceramicists and 24 tattooers have worked together over the year to create the interior vignettes of a home. This is the love child between Sofia Golavanevskaya and Ali Fisher and will feature decorated dining ware, planters, stools, sinks and lighting. Shupiwe Chongwe is a featured ceramicist who will be showcasing collaborative work as well as her own unique sculptural vessels.

OPENING NIGHT
FRIDAY 24TH OCTOBER
6.30-10PM - Downstairs @ps.artspace

Shupiwe Chongwe has been selected as the inaugural Western Australian participant in a new exchange program between the sā Ladakh Biennale in the Indian Himalayas and the Fremantle Biennale on the Indian Ocean.
This pioneering collaboration connects both continents through long-form residencies, focusing on regenerative practices and interventions in times of a changing climate. It aims to foster environmentally responsive creative practices and awareness raising.
Shupiwe will undertake a residency with the Parkhang Collective and the Likir pottery community in Ladakh, known for using traditional materials like sun-dried mountain clay, cow dung for kiln firing, and sulphur from hot springs.
